Gradually emerging from pale, peachy-pink buds, the flowers of 'Lichfield Angel' start as deeply cupped rosettes before forming domed blooms of creamy white - seeming pure white in bright sunshine. Each head has a circle of waxy outer petals which surround a multitude of smaller petals. A light fragrance issues from the flowers with periodic hints of exotic clove. This variety holds the Royal Horticultural Society's Award for Garden Merit.
The name of this rose commemorates the discovery, in the nave of Lichfield Cathedral in 2003, of an 8th century carved limestone panel which is believed to depict the Archangel Gabriel. Amazingly, the surface pigment has been preserved showing the angel in red with white wing tips, on a white background.
With a lovely rounded and bushy habit, 'Lichfield Angel' is ideal for planting in the middle of a border. The creamy white shade of the petals means that it will tone with any colour scheme.
Roses thrive on sunshine, ideally a minimum of four hours each day to perform their best. However, roses can still perform well in shadier locations, with selected varieties suitable for growing against a north wall.
Roses can be planted year round, but avoid doing so when the ground is frozen, waterlogged or in periods of drought. Dusting the roots with Mycorrhizal Fungi when planting will aid establishment. Allow your rose plenty of space to develop to its best, sited away from intense competition of trees & hedges.
Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base of the plant in early spring to help retain moisture and help keep competing weeds at bay. Gently fork rose fertiliser into the soil surface and continue to water well throughout the growing season. Dead-head flowers to encourage fresh new blooms to follow.
