Spurge

A handsome evergreen that will add a twist to a hot dry border or big container in a sunny spot.

With it's subtle changes in leaf colour through the year, Euphorbia 'Rudolf' is a great addition to a sunny, dry garden. New leaves begin in spring with a reddish tinge and mature to blue-green. The tips of the plants become red again later in the year, as  temperatures fall, providing welcome winter interest. Clusters of early spring flowers are bright greenish-yellow and change to maroon and pink shades before the knobbly seed heads appear. As well as being perfectly at home at the front of a sunny or partly shaded border, on a well drained bank or in a gravel garden, Euphorbia 'Rudolph' can also be grown in a container where it will require very little attention or watering. The perfect plant to add a Mediterranean look to your garden, this striking Spurge looks great with French Lavender, Russian Sage, grasses and other drought tolerant plants.

Deep red tinged foliage is a lovely feature through winter when there is often little to look at in the garden.

Plant Care & Advice

Euphorbia 'Rudolph' grows best in full sun but will also do well in a partly shaded spot that gets sun in the afternoon. The soil should be well drained to prevent your plant becoming too wet through the winter, so add some grit when planting.

Use a good quality loam based compost if planting in a container and raise the container up on 'pot feet' during wet weather to prevent waterlogging. During very cold weather, move plants in pots to a sheltered area or cold greenhouse.

This Spurge is drought tolerant once established so will need very little water even when planted in a container. Feed your plants in late spring by scattering a handful of general fertiliser around the base of the plant and water in well.

The soil can be topped up with mulch of ornamental bark or garden compost. Remove the flower heads once they have faded by cutting the old stems back to the ground. Wear gloves as the sap can irritate your skin.
