Common Polypody

A fantastic evergreen fern with a long season of interest, producing attractive, upright fronds.

Ferns have long been a popular plant for providing interest in tricky shady spaces, and Polypodium vulgare is a particularly hardy, resilient and reliable variety that will do just that. Not only will it grow well in shade, but unlike many other ferns this one is happy in sun too, making it a good all-rounder for filling spaces in any part of the garden. With a compact habit, Polypodium is ideal for growing in smaller gaps or narrow borders, where it will put on a lovely display of lush, green foliage which lasts all through the year. This easy-to-grow, fully hardy and relatively unfussy variety is perfect for beginners. It's really versatile, with its wonderful, soft-textured foliage combining well with flowering plants in sunny borders as well as a more simple, shady or contemporary planting schemes. Fresh new leaves emerge every spring and slowly uncurl into attractive, structural fronds which maintain their glossy green colour.

A low-maintenance, compact fern ideal for growing in sunny or shady borders or containers.

Plant Care & Advice

Polypodium vulgare (Common Polypody) is a low maintenance fern and thrives in a sunny or partially shaded spot in a sheltered location, such as within a shrubbery, mixed border or enclosed courtyard garden.

This variety loves any well-drained, moist soil. Water well until established and mulch in spring with garden compost or bark chippings.

Water regularly throughout the first year to help the anchor the roots. Once established, this variety will require very little additional watering unless planted in very dry shade.

It's not necessary to feed your fern, although you can apply an occasional all-purpose liquid feed during the first season to help it to establish.

Cut back any old or tatty foliage in autumn or early spring to make space for the fresh new foliage to grow.
