Rhododendron Marie Fortier
Deep wine red flowers with dark speckled throat in Spring on a compact growing evergreen plant. .
Hybrids are very similar to the traditional Rhododendron but have been bred to be smaller and more compact so that they can grow well in gardens alongside other shrubs. They have a wide selection of strong, eye catching flower colours that provide a long lasting Spring display and the evergreen foliage makes for great screening and privacy. The flower buds set in August and then sit tight but visible throughout Autumn and Winter before opening and flowering in Spring.
This low maintenance, evergreen plant is great for good ground cover and bringing colour into shady areas.

Plant Care & Advice

Water your plant well in its pot prior to planting. Dig a hole twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the root ball and loosen the soil in the bottom of the hole to improve drainage. Back fill the hole with a good quality ericaceous compost (preferably with added John Innes). Place your plant in the hole so the top of the root ball is 2cm above ground level such that the root ball appears slightly raised. Rhododendrons dislike being planted too deep. Backfill around the plant with more ericaceous compost until level with the ground and gently firm with your hands. The root ball will now be around 2cm proud of ground level. Now add a Pine Bark chip mulch, 4-5cm over the ground and 2-3cm over the root ball to bring it all level again.

Mulching is most important to keep the roots cool, aerate the soil, retain soil moisture, reduce weed growth plus it gives it a lovely finish. Water the plant well to give it a good start and regularly during dry periods for the first few years until established. Keep topping up the pine bark mulch as and when required.
