Lesser Periwinkle

Lesser Periwinkle is a cottage-garden classic, providing a year-round carpet of colour in shady spaces and is very easy to grow.

This wonderful evergreen, spreading plant is the perfect choice for brightening up a shady spot, such as around shrubberies. Periwinkle thrives in all but the driest of soils and provides a lovely mat of green foliage all year round, then is dotted with pretty deep purple flowers during spring to add that welcome bit of colour just as the garden is waking up after winter. This Lesser Periwinkle is smaller and daintier than the more robust Greater Periwinkle, which makes it ideal for covering smaller spaces, or for use as a long-living trailing plant in permanent container displays. Over the years, in borders the long stems spread and re-root, filling in the gaps to provide a dense covering of colour. Whether you're green-fingered or not, this reliable plant will provide effortless, low-maintenance interest in the garden and once established can be left to its own devices.

If you want a plant that's easy to look after and fills a dull space with long-lasting colour, Periwinkle is the perfect choice.

Plant Care & Advice

Lesser Periwinkle is low growing and spreading and generally unfussy about soil as long as it is not too dry or whether it's in sun or shade, however it does tend to do best in shade.

This variety is ideal for planting in shady borders and looks fantastic in a woodland planting scheme. It tolerates any soil type and is also happy in a container where it will adopt a trailing habit.

Water well when first planted and continue to water regularly throughout its first season, particularly if planted in a sunny spot. After it's first year it should be pretty self-sufficient in terms of watering.

It's not necessary to feed periwinkle plants, however you can apply a balanced liquid feed during the growing season to encourage healthy new growth, especially if growing in a pot.

Lesser Periwinkle is a fairly small ground cover plant but if it spreads a bit too far it's very easy to trim back to the size required with secateurs.
